Cacao Prieto

My last stop on my October Brooklyn Candy Challenge was to Cacao Prieto in Red Hook. I’ve only been to Red Hook once, to go to Ikea. Trust me, this is a much more delicious trip and you don’t need to assemble anything.

This isn’t just a shop, it’s their factory, turning out chocolate bars and whiskey, not a bad combination. Their chocolate is made fresh from organic ingredients, all sourced from a self-sustainable, family farm in the Dominican Republic. They also offer whiskey and chocolate tours.

Their bars are no joke, weighing in at 4.2oz. I went for the Pecan and Sour Cherry, made with 72% dark chocolate.

This bar had the perfect combination of sweetness and bitterness with a deep flavor and excellent texture to the dark chocolate. The sour cherry and whole pecans are really a great fruit and nut pairing and makes for a simple, yet sophisticated sweet treat.

The Shorts:
Name: Cacao Prieto
Location: 218 Conover Street, Brooklyn and online
The Long and Short: Would I buy it again? I would, it was delicious, but at $10 a bar, I would probably get a gift package for a present.
Would I recommend it? For sure. I would recommend making a thing of it, take the water taxi over (if you’re traveling from Manhattan), take a tour, and buy some chocolate!

Nunu Chocolates

For my next stop on my October Brooklyn Candy Challenge, I visited Nunu Chocolates.

Nunu is run by a husband and wife duo, and they’re taking great detail into handcrafted, sustainable, naturally made truffles and caramels.  They have lots of great sounding products, including hot chocolate.

To narrow down my decision, I went with their most popular item, their Hand Dipped Salt Caramels.

Amazing. No, so amazing. Caramel dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled with Fleur de Sel.

The chocolate is smooth, not overly bitter but has a melty texture that makes it so great. You instantly get the salty and sweet component. I especially love the larger flakes of sea salt, no need to be shy with the salt. The caramel is rich and deep in flavor with an excellent consistency, and not overly sweet, which balances out the whole chocolate so well.
