The Southern

This past weekend I was in Nashville. Yup, first timer here. Aside from hearing more country music than I’ve probably listened to in my entire life, I also was lucky enough to enjoy some great food and drinks. My first stop was The Southern, located in Nashville’s SoBro district. As the name gives away, this restaurant is serving up southern style food with a flare, using local produce, sustainable seafood, and directly-sourced meats.

For a drink, I ordered Blackberry Mountain Tea (Ole Smokey Blackberry Moonshine, sweet tea, muddled fresh blackberries). This was a pretty great drink. The sweetness and flavor of the tea sneakily masks the potency of the moonshine, allowing you to enjoy more of a refreshing, fresh blackberry sweet tea. But, you know, with booze.

For my lunch, I ordered their Earthy Crunchy Sandwich (grilled portabella, smoked cheddar, balsamic onions, spinach and basil mayo, whole wheat bread, served with butternut squash and goat cheese). This sandwich was amazing. Served in a club fashion with three pieces of bread, it was perfectly toasted and crunchy, as the name infers, on the outside, and soft in the center, absorbing the juices from the plump mushrooms. All the flavors went really nicely together here, and the butternut squash and goat cheese is a great compliment to the sandwich, adding a touch of mild sweetness.

The Shorts:
Name: The Southern
Location: 150 3rd Avenue South, Nashville
The Long and Short: Would I go back? For sure, the food and drinks were delicious, the service was great, and there’s a great outdoor patio space too for dining.
Would I recommend it? Yes, there’s something for everyone, and, if you’re a fan of hot sauces, they have plenty. I recommend trying the mango, it’s pretty awesome.
