Astro Doughnuts And Fried Chicken

Ok, so, I let my friends take me out on some dining adventures, but, I can’t go to a different city, or any city for that matter, without some sweets. So, I had to check out Astro Doughnuts And Fried Chicken in Washington DC.

Everything here is made fresh on premises daily. They have some amazing sounding flavors and exciting, rotating special flavors like Birthday Cake and Espresso. Oh, and of course the fried chicken, combining two great comfort foods. But, I came for the doughnuts.

I went for one of my favorite flavor combinations, the nostalgic Peanut Butter and Jelly. Sandwich, what? PBJs should all be in doughnut form, this one was so delicious. The doughnut is light and pillowy, glazed with this wonderfully sweet peanut butter coating.

And inside, yup, generously injected with the jelly. What I really liked here, was that the jelly tastes fresh and not artificially sweetened, balancing out the sweetness of the glaze really nicely.

The Long and Short: Would I go back? Without a doubt. Next time, in addition to the PBJ, I’m going for that Creme Brûlée.
Would I recommend it? Uh, yeah. Get your Astro over there.

Next stop on my 7 Best Doughnuts In NYC Challenge is The Cinnamon Snail food truck. The truck is serving an all vegan menu, including breakfast and lunch items.

But, I had to go for the donuts…you know, for research. I tried the Vanilla Bourbon Creme Brûlée donut.

So, I’ll always keep it honest. At first glance/meeting, the donut was a bit on the greasy side. But, it’s pretty easy for me to work past that. The donut itself had a really good texture with a mild crunch on the outside from the baked sugar, and soft on the inside. The dough had a very pleasant flavor, although I wasn’t really getting a lot of distinguishing flavors. The top-center of the donut is where you’ll find the Creme Brûlée portion. Again, pleasant, but I wasn’t really hit with powerful or remarkable flavors.

The Long and Short: Would I go back? For donuts, maybe not. But, they seem to have a large breakfast and lunch following, so, I would be up for giving that a shot!
Would I recommend it? As a top donut place to try, probably not.
