In my short, but sweet, stay in Newport, RI, I also go to visit neighborhood spot, The Hungry Monkey. And, if nothing else, it’s a pretty adorable name for a restaurant. Luckily, they had more than a cute name to offer.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? And, well, lunch is pretty important too. Hell, I take all meals pretty seriously. This local, casual restaurant only serves daytime fare, breakfast and lunch, so, make sure to stop by during the day while you can.

For breakfast, I kept it simple and ordered the Omelette Your Way with spinach and rye toast (2 Egg omelette with one choice of filling, served with home fries and choice of toast). A simple dish, yes, but delicious. The service is great, the food comes out quickly, and the vibe is really relaxed. My favorite part was the home fries, these things were incredible. Like, some of the best home fries I’ve had. They were spicy, so, tread lightly if you’re not a spice fan, flavorful and cooked perfectly with that crispness on the outside and tender meets softness in the middle.

The Long and Short: Would I go back? For sure. Next time I’m in Newport, I’ll be back, and hitting up their Stuffed Monkey Bread French Toast. 
Would I recommend it? I’d be a monkey’s uncle (or aunt) if you went anywhere else for breakfast.

This past weekend, I was in Newport, RI. It was a short trip, but, I always find time to check out a couple restaurants. My first stop was Mexican restaurant, Diego’s on the Wharf in Downtown Newport.

The patio is now open, and I recommend you sit out there. Market lights strewn all around, this casual spot is serving fresh Mexican cuisine with a modern twist. To start, we ordered the Braker’s Guac (made-to order guacamole served with freshly cooked tortilla chips with Salsa Fresca). This is the perfect starter, and the best part is, they refill your chips. The guac is rustically chopped up, fresh and flavorful. The salsa is really nice too, and the chips have a great crisp crunch.

To drink, I went with The Passion of Spice (El Buho Mezcal, fresh passion fruit puree, habanero infused tequila, house made sour and pineapple juice served on the rocks). This drink was pretty incredible. You’re hit with the heat from the habanero, and then get a little bit of the smokiness from the Mezcal, but then, to refresh and cool off the drink, is the sweetness from the passion fruit and pineapple. Really, really good.

For my entree, I ordered The Spicy Catch Salad (Blackened Cod over mixed greens with julienned veggies, ripe tomato, pineapple jicama salsa and pomegranate-chipotle vinaigrette). I really loved this salad. The ingredients were abundant, yet light, allowing you to eat healthy without leaving hungry. The fish was light, flaky, and full of flavor with a really nice spice. The dressing was really delicious too, adding some sweetness to the fresh dish.

The Long and Short: Would I go back? For sure. They’re in a great location, right at the water, the service is friendly and the food is really tasty.
Would I recommend it? Si! Everything was really good here, you can’t go wrong.
