Seafood. I love it. So, when I heard Michael Chernow, co-owner of The Meatball Shop, opened up a new seafood spot in Nolita, I had to check out Seamore’s.


Similar to The Meatball Shop, the vibe is laid back, the menu has delicious offerings, and the price point is super affordable. The focus is all on seasonal seafood, primarily fish, but there are still options for vegetarians and even a burger, if you HAVE to eat meat. But really, it’s all about the seafood, so, you should definitely go with that. To start, I ordered a cocktail, Mezcal Old Fashioned (mezcal, resposado tequila, muddled citrus, citrus bitters). So, I love mezcal, but I’m not a huge Old Fashioned fan, but, I let the former outweigh the latter in my decision. Ok, so, perhaps not my best decision. On a positive, I only needed to order one drink, since it was pretty potent (win for my wallet, maybe not the best for their chance to get me to order another beverage). I will say though, while it isn’t meant to be a sweet drink, I would have loved a little more of the citrus flavor, a little lighter on the bitters. However, an Old Fashioned drinker might have loved it without any complaints. I did get to try my dining buddy’s drink, Shore Thing, which was super delightful, and would definitely order that next time. 


To eat, I ordered Spicy Squid Tacos (corn tortillas, kale, apple, cotija, corn nuts). Ho. Ly. S**t. These were so amazing. The tacos themselves are generous in size, and stacked with the ingredients, so, you’re probably good to take a couple big bites of each one before losing most of it on the plate. So, in an unusual taco-eating fashion, I had to fork and knife it, which, was totally fine, and, made me look like a delicate lady (thanks, Seamore’s). The spicy squid isn’t too spicy, and has a fantastically seasoned flavor with a bit of a briny scent and flavor. The rest of the ingredients bring such a complexity of flavor and texture, that it can only best be summed up as f**king delicious. That’s technical enough, right?

The Long and Short: Would I go back? Hell yes. The tacos were so amazing, and I literally wanted just about everything off the menu, so, I have my work cut out for me.
Would I recommend it? For shore (bad pun, sorry, had to). The service was great, the food was fantastic, I just won’t be ordering the same drink again. A small sacrifice for a brilliant dish.



I love Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food. And any place that’s serving it with a creative twist, well, I’m automatically intrigued. So, I knew I had to go to Balaboosta in NoLIta. The husband and wife duo who own Balaboosta definitely pay homage to their heritage and family throughout the restaurant, from the pictures on the wall and the backs of the menus. Now, before going, I honestly had no idea that these were the same brilliant minds behind Taim, which I had just recently gone to and had the most incredible Falafel Sandwich. Well, it explains a lot, and these guys are absolutely doing things right. 


To start, I had a cocktail, Camelia (Pimm’s no. 1, strawberry, cucumber, mint, ginger ale). It was a little fizzy, a little sweet, refreshing, and a little bit strong. No complaints here. 


Then, we were kindly given a complimentary appetizer along with some friendly conversation. These personal touches really go a long way and bring in an added connection to the restaurant and full experience. I had their Fried Olives with house made organic labne. Oh. My. Goodness. So, I could probably eat these all day, all the time, they were delicious. There’s a common idea that everything is better fried. Well, I’ve never had a fried olive until now, and, yup, it’s way better. The labne, similar to a yogurt, was creamy and delicious and really balances out the saltiness of the olive. 


For my meal I had the Shakshouka (baked organic eggs in spicy tomato sauce, spinach, grilled sourdough). I loved this. I’ve had Shakshouka before, but this might have been the best one. It’s fresh and healthy, but still has a spicy, comfort food quality that really hits all marks. The sourdough on the side is crunchy and makes for the best little spongy scoop to spoon up all of the tomato goodness.

Name: Balaboosta
Location: 214 Mulberry Street, NYC
The Long and Short: Would I go back? Without a doubt. Fun fact, Balaboosta is a “Yiddish term meaning the perfect housewife, homemaker, wonderful mother, cook and gracious hostess. She does it all and she does it well!”. And yeah, she’s killin it! 
Would I recommend it? Oh yeah, food so good, even if you don’t know any Yiddish, you’ll be saying “oy” at how delicious it is.
