Sarge’s

A horrible fire completely wiped out this nearly 50 year old restaurant a bit over a year ago. Now, back in action, you can revisit this staple deli, Sarge’s in Murray Hill.

This old school deli serves up all of your deli favorites from pastrami and ruben sandwiches on rye bread, to matzo ball soup to rugelach. I was glad to be back here for brunch, and almost forgot how amazing this place is. You sit down, and boom, right away you’ve got your coffee, pickles, cole slaw and mini bran muffins. Thank you, Sarge’s mind readers.

For my meal, I decided an old Jewish classic, Matzo Brei with applesauce. The dish itself is pretty basic, but it’s so good and such a real comfort food. The great thing about the matzo brei, is that you can transform it into sweet or savory. Add a little salt and pepper, you have a savory dish, add some jam and the apple sauce, and you’ve got sweet. I went the sweet route and was very pleased I did.

The Long and Short: Would I go back? Well, I’ve actually been quite a few times. And, since it’s 24 hours, I can be sure to visit again at any time of day.
Would I recommend it? Yes, you get a real family vibe here with homestyle food. Oh, and try the deli mustard, it’s amazing.

The Winslow

14th Street has many things, quick service food spots, banks, subway stations, but, a cool bar isn’t usually one of them. Until now, there’s The Winslow in the East Village.

This U.K.-inspired bar is serving up cocktails and food, offering the area a change of pace and classin’ up the joint. For my drink, I ordered Mr. P’s Turner Clarkson (reposado tequila, mezcal, Averna, Nocino, ginger). Now, since I’m unapologetically a cocktail snob, I wanted to customize this bad boy a little bit. The bartenders here are really friendly, and we added a little bit of hot sauce to mine. Still needed a little something else, and, a drizzle of agave nectar did the trick. This was a good one with some great additions. Nice smokiness, nice sweetness with a bit of heat coming through.

To go along with the drink, snack time seemed like a good idea. First, I got their house-made Pickles: Hot Sour Baby Veg (green beans and carrots). These were great, crisp, vinegary, and a little bit spicy.

Then, I had the Cheese Board (Tickler English cheddar, Shropshire Blue, Ardrahan, truffle honey, seasonal fruit, spiced pecans). This was just delightful, served with crisp cinnamon-raisin bread, similar to bagel chips.

Would I recommend it? For sure, a great low key bar with plenty of seating and a refined vibe.
