Chi’Lantro BBQ

My SXSW food tour continues at Chi’Lantro BBQ in Downtown Austin. This highly popular food truck is making Korean BBQ and Mexican Fusion Tacos.

I ordered their Tofu Tacos (soft, double-layered corn tortillas, soy vinaigrette Korean salad, cilantro, onion, Chi’Lantro salsa). These are some totally tasty tacos. The tofu is cubed and fried, giving it a great crisp outside and soft inside, absorbing the flavors from the soy vinaigrette and salsa like a little soy sponge. The salsa is great, spicy, and is complimented by the freshness of the salad and cilantro.

The Shorts:
Name: Chi’Lantro BBQ
Location: Location changes, you can check where they’ll be here.
The Long and Short: Would I go back? Absolutely, I’ve actually gone the three times I’ve been to Austin.
Would I recommend it? Yes, the Kimchi Fries are also something to try and the Seoul Burrito is pretty unreal.

Gourdough’s

This week I’m in Austin, TX for SXSW. Sure, there are events, parties, music, but I’m most excited about the food. And one place that I’ve been looking forward to visiting was Gourdough’s. Their tagline, “Big. Fat. Doughnuts.”, is absolutely spot on. All of their doughnuts are made to order, frying up each doughnut fresh in their vintage Airstream Trailer. But their doughnuts aren’t just big and fat, they’re gratuitously loaded with unique and deliciously decadent toppings.

I ordered the Funky Monkey (Grilled Bananas, Cream Cheese Icing with Brown Sugar). Sweet. Baby. Jesus. This was, without a doubt, one of the best doughnuts I’ve ever had before. For starters, this thing is huge, weighing in at probably about a pound. The dough is warm and pillowy and melts in your mouth. The cream cheese icing is rich, very sweet and completely amazing, becoming almost gooey when atop the warmness of the dough. Then, you have the bananas on top which are caramelized, sweet and creamy with a sprinkling of brown sugar, adding a little crunch.
