Up next on my 12 Best Bakeries In NYC Challenge from Gothamist’s list is Poseidon Bakery in Hell’s Kitchen.
This Greek bakery has both savory and sweet classic Greek goods. There are no frills here, just an authentic bakery with a warm, old school, family vibe. They let the treats speak for themselves. And, though some items hard to pronounce, they do…in Greek, of course.
I got two items (because, everything sounded too good to just get one), neither of which were Baklava. I’ve had many Baklavas in my day, and, I figured that an authentic Greek Bakery is where I should be trying new things. First, I tried Afali (fun fact: it means “birds nest”), which has a roll of chopped pistachios surrounded by phyllo and dipped in honey. It tastes just as good as it sounds, maybe better. The honey soaked phyllo is slightly crisp and tender at the same time, covering a mound of chopped pistachios that balance out the sweetness. Then, I got Galaktoboureko, a rich custard wrapped in phyllo. This was awesome too. Again, you have that great sweetness and texture of the phyllo, and then theres a slightly sweet and creamy custard that I would describe as almost tapioca like.
I recommend using a fork to dig in.
